KENYA / Revenue / Kodi (Poll Tax) c1950 KGVI 1/- rose-red and dull (reddish) purple. Perf 13 (appears to be line perf rather than comb). Vertical pair with interpanneau margin at right showing parallel bars in vignette and frame colours. The lower stamp with clean horizontal crease, otherwise superb fresh unmounted mint. Rare and most attractive.

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE 1899 (October), cover sent registered to Argentina bearing 1/6 postage, comprising 4 x ½d green, 6 x 1d and 4 x 2½d (SG 61, 59, 63), each cancelled / tied by OUDTSHOORN (16 Oct) single circle datestamps. The cover was damaged in transit and resealed on three sides with strips of brown ‘V. R. / FOUND OPEN AND / OFFICIALLY SEALED’ labels overlapping many of the stamps. Cape Town (18 Oct) and London (4 Nov) transits and Buenos Aires (3 Dec) arrival datestamps. A characterful cover to an unusual destination sent five days after the outbreak of war. £85

TRANSVAAL c1899 stampless cover addressed to Durban. Bearing on the reverse, a Boer pink censor label tied by signatures and very fine LLANWARNE / Z.A.R. undated squared octagon. Most unusual and late irregular usage of this very rare datestamp. This type not recorded by Mathews or Putzel, the latter states “Office no longer listed 1892”. Some creasing and part of flap missing. Intriguing.

TRANSVAAL 1900 (August), Boer retreat to Eastern Transvaal. ‘Machadodorp’ 1d red postal stationery card addressed to Holland, cancelled MACHADODORP (21 Aug) double circle datestamp. The interesting message (in Dutch) on the reverse includes references to the war ‘…last week we expected to be attacked but the enemy withdrew to Middelburg, it will now be quiet for some time, as they need a few days before they can regroup at Dalmanutha and be ready for battle. The retreat is due to General C. De Wet having crossed the Vaal river…’ [signed] L. van Wijk. 5000 of these cards were printed at Machadodorp in early June 1900 following the British capture of Pretoria and the retreat of the Boer Government to Machadodorp. They were used by various Boer controlled Post offices in the eastern Transvaal between June and September 1900. Utrecht (12 Nov) arrival datestamp. In remarkably fine condition.
