Postal History 1895 (March), QV 1d embossed stationery envelope addressed to Lady Grey Bridge, then readdressed to Paarl. The embossed stamp is cancelled with a light but readable ‘253’ BONC with proving strike of VAN RHYN’S DORP (20 Mar) single circle datestamp alongside. With unusual LADY GREY BRIDGE (22 Mar) segmented single circle datestamp on the front and reverse and a Paarl (22 Mar) arrival backstamp. The reverse with violet oval cachet of ‘P.B. VAN RHYN / VAN RHYN’S DORP’. The town was established in 1887 on the farm of Petrus Benjamin van Rhyn and named after him.
