Postal History 1848 (November), incoming entire sent from Glasgow on the 2nd November with a neat Glasgow Paid (2 Nov) datestamp struck in red. Addressed to ‘Algoa Bay’ (later renamed Port Elizabeth) and charged 1s 4d, being the letter rate from England to the Cape of Good Hope which is shown by a manuscript ‘1/4’ in red on the front. There is also a large manuscript ‘1/’ in black, presumably denoting the amount due to the ship. Bearing a framed rectangular ‘TO-PAY’ marking believed to have been applied in Port Elizabeth.
