1914 15th July, envelope bearing a single King’s Head 2½d bright blue (SG 7) tied by light ROUXVILLE double circle datestamp, addressed to Germany. World War I broke out on the 28th July (almost two weeks after posting), resulting in the cover receiving a fine two-line bilingual UNDELIVERABLE-WAR / ONBESTELBAAR-OORLOG cachet struck in blue-black and a ‘UNDELIVERED FOR REASON STATED. / RETURN TO SENDER AT / ADDRESS SHOWN ON COVER. / FROM R.L.O., CAPE TOWN.’ cachet struck in violet. The reverse with a RETURNED L.O. CAPE TOWN (SP 23) datestamp struck in blue-black.
