Postal History 1881 (February), envelope addressed to France endorsed “Via England”. Bearing 7½d in postage (the rate to Europe) comprising a vertical pair of the 1880 ‘3’ surcharge on 3d pale dull rose (SG 37) in combination with examples of the ½d and 1d overprinted ‘G’ (SG 24, 25, overprinted for use in Griqualand West). All are tied by KIMBERLEY (10 Feb) unframed circular datestamps. Cape Town (15 Feb), London (8 Mar) and Paris (9 Mar) transit / arrival backstamps and with Calais (8 Mar) transit on the front additionally tying the 1d adhesive. With large 2½d Cape accountancy mark struck in red. The address partially inked out though a scarce and attractive cover.
 
Note: Following incorporation of Griqualand West into the Cape Colony in October 1880, the remaining overprinted stamps were redistributed among various Cape post offices. This cover is dated approximately four months later and shows usage of the ‘G’ overprints at one of the original Griqualand West post offices.
