COLONIAL DIE PROOF c1902 Queen Alexandra, printed by Waterlow & Sons in black on cream paper (103x90mm) with die number ‘3370’ endorsed at top. Believed to have been engraved by H. Bourne in 1902. Small repaired tear at left, well clear of the design. Most attractive and a superb example of the engraver’s art.
Note: this engraving was previously believed to be of Mary, Duchess of York. However, further research has revealed that this proof appears to be the same as illustrated on the cover of 'The Die Proofs of Waterlow & Sons' by Colin Fraser and Robson Lowe (1985) who state it is in fact Queen Alexandra (mother of George, Duke of York).
