POSTAL HISTORY
T1774
1889 (March), locally addressed unsealed printed circular dated 13th March 1889 concerning the establishment of a library in Johannesburg. Bearing a single Vurtheim ½d grey (SG 175) cancelled with a Johannesburg (15 Mar) single circle datestamp. A fine early example of the unsealed printed matter rate. Odd edge fault and light bends, otherwise very fine and scarce.

Note: the addressee, (Captain) Carl Von Brandis, was the Witwatersrand's first mining commissioner and Johannesburg's first landdrost. A Johannesburg street was named in his honour.
