REVENUE 1878 Bradbury Wilkinson QV ‘Bourne Head’ 5/- revenue duty. Imperforate plate proof BLOCK OF 56 printed in unissued colour of deep brown on thin card. Comprising a complete pane (12x5) less a block of four removed at lower right. Faults including an expertly repaired tear through the fifth column and several other stamps (mainly peripheral) with repaired tears or surface scuffs. A spectacular and almost certainly unique multiple of the QV ‘Bourne Head’ revenue issue.

Note: in ‘Transvaal Revenue and Telegraph Stamps’ (1995, page 35) Alan Drysdall states: “Imperforate plate proofs include strikes in black on thin card and in various colours on both gummed and ungummed wove paper slightly thicker than that used for the issued stamps and apparently unwatermarked. Examples perforated ‘SPECIMEN’ are probably printer’s samples.”
