POSTAL HISTORY
T2169
1890 (8th December), envelope addressed to England. Bearing ‘Vurtheim’ ½d grey, 1d carmine and three 2d olive-bistre (SG 175, 176b, 178) all tied by PIETERSBURG (8 Dec) single circle datestamps struck in VIOLET. Pretoria (12 Dec) transit and London (5 Jan) arrival backstamps. The adhesives with faults and some peripheral wear, though an attractive three-colour franking.

Note: the letter rate to England at this date was 6d per half ounce. It is therefore unclear why there was a 1½d overpayment of postage. It is possible the 7½d per half ounce letter rate to Europe via Cape Colony was applied in error.
