POSTAL HISTORY
T2298
1893 (20th June), locally addressed envelope bearing a single ‘Vurtheim’ 1d carmine (SG 176) tied by a JOHANNESBURG (20 June) single circle datestamp. The envelope was unclaimed and received strikes of small unframed straight-line ‘GEPUBLICEERD’ and ‘ONAFGEHAALD’ cachets, both struck in black. The reverse with a boxed ‘ONAFGEHAALDE BRIEVENKANTOOR / 4 SEP 93 / PRETORIA Z.A.R.’ cachet struck in blue (very fine for this). Undelivered mail was handled in Pretoria at this time. Two small pinholes at left, otherwise a superb and very scarce array of early instructional markings.
