POSTAL HISTORY 1887 (19th August), envelope addressed to Germany. Bearing 1d red-brown, 6d rose (with interpanneau margin at right) and a ½d chestnut, (SG 2, 5, 48), tied by ‘2’ in 16-bar numeral canceller of Winburg struck in reddish brown. Backstamped WINBURG despatch (19 Aug, also struck in reddish brown), Bloemfontein (21? Aug) transit and Frankfurt (14 Sep) arrival datestamps. With a large ‘2½d’ accountancy handstamp struck in red indicating the amount due to the British postal authorities. A fine and attractive example of the 7½d rate to Europe introduced on 5th September, 1882.
