1878 Queen Victoria ‘Bourne Head’ design. The 1/- green handstamped ‘CANCELLED’ in black (Samuel Type D7). Affixed to small piece, the adhesive with some edge faults as to be expected. Very rare, believed to be unique. Ex the De La Rue Archives; Besançon (2019); David Underwood collection, and beautifully written up on his display page. SG 138 Cancelled
Note: although De La Rue’s 1877 tender for the Transvaal contract was unsuccessful, it appears they kept a sample duty of the successful Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. stamp for their records. One of the very few times the ‘CANCELLED’ handstamp of one firm was applied to the stamp of another.
