1898 (19th November), philatelically inspired ‘Tamsen’ envelope sent registered to Germany. Bearing 1s.2d postage comprising an array of nine different surcharged adhesives: ‘TWEE PENCE / Z.A.R.’ on QV ‘Bourne Head’ 6d black-brown; ‘2d’ on 3d mauve (vertical pair showing normal and curved foot to ‘2’); ‘Halve / Penny’ on 2d olive-bistre (red and black (spaced) surcharges); ‘1 Penny’ on 6d blue (surcharge upright and inverted); ‘2½ Pence’ on 1/- green (surcharge upright and inverted). SG 191, 193, 194, 195, 196ca, 197, 197b, 198, 198b. All tied by NYLSTROOM / Z.A.R. (19 Nov) double circle datestamps. Pretoria (20 Nov) transit and Hamburg (12 Dec) arrival backstamps. Red wax seal on reverse. An attractive array of issues. Ex David Underwood collection.
  Note: despite appearances, it would appear the 1s/2d paid represents a genuine postal rate of a quadruple weight letter at 2½d per half ounce plus 4d registration.
