1851 (31st July), small envelope addressed to Roxburghshire, Scotland. Endorsed at top ‘Per Steamer Hellespont’ and showing a good strike of the GENERAL POST OFFICE / [Crown] / CAPE TOWN oval handstamp. Various rate markings in red and black manuscript and backstamped with British transit datestamps (10 Sep and 11 Sep) struck in red. The front showing ST BOSWELLS (11 Sep) boxed arrival datestamp struck in black. The reverse with manuscript endorsement “31 July / 1851 / Major Wm Rutherford”. Vertical fold, otherwise very fine.
 
Note: The Hellespont is recorded sailing from Cape Town on the 1st August 1851, calling at Sierra Leone and St Vincent, arriving at Plymouth on the 10th September 1851. [http://www.historic-shipping.co.uk/african/hellespont.html]
