POSTAL HISTORY 1892 (4th April), stampless cover (shortened at right) to Winburg endorsed ‘In Dienst’ bearing large circular ORANGE VRYSTAAT / ARTILLERIE cachet (Coat of Arms over two crossed canons) struck in purple. Bloemfontein (4 Apr) squared octagon datestamp at left. Backstamped with Winburg (5 Apr) unframed circular datestamp. This Artillery Regiment comprised 30-40 soldiers and was the only permanent force in the OFS to have free mailing privileges. A good strike of this very scarce cachet, usually poorly impressed.
