ZULULAND 1888-1893 GB QV complete set of ten, ½d to 1/-, overprinted ‘ZULULAND’. Each stamp further handstamped ‘CANCELLED’ (Samuel type GB14), superb unmounted mint. Very rare, this handstamp was applied by DLR to only 12 examples of certain stamps under Inland Revenue authority and only six examples of each duty are believed to exist outside the National Postal Museum. ZULULAND / Revenue Essay 1889 stamp-sized essay for a 1d duty inscribed ‘Revenue / Revenue’. Handpainted in mauve, green and Chinese white on buff tracing paper (60x77mm, corner faults), dated ‘May 20th 89’. A superb and most attractive essay. BPA certificate (2011). AZ18 ZULULAND / Forgery 1888 GB QV ½d vermilion. An upper right corner marginal block of 30, each apparently bearing a forged ‘ZULULAND’ overprint, applied inverted. Creasing and some reinforced splitting, otherwise fine mint. Although widely regarded as a forgery, the overprint is virtually identical to known genuine examples apart from a few positions which appear 0.5 mm shorter. Philatelic Foundation certificate (1946) bears a photographs of a pane of 60 although the text refers to a block of 30, and states ‘that it is counterfeit’. SG 1 forgery. £275

AZ61 ZULULAND / Postal History 1891 (15th October), envelope addressed to Natal, bearing a single 1d dull mauve postal fiscal (SG F1) tied by an ESHOWE / ZULULAND (15 Oct) double circle datestamp. Durban (17 Oct), GPO Natal (18 Oct) and Hermannsburg (20 Oct) transit / arrival backstamps. A very scarce example of this stamp used alone on cover. £325
AZ59 ZULULAND / Postal History 1894 (17th October), long folded official envelope with a superb ‘TREASURY / ZULULAND’ red wax seal on the flap and ‘ON HER MAJESTY’S SERVICE’ crossed through at top. Addressed to Paris and sent registered, with a large oval framed ‘R’ struck at left. Bearing two examples of the 1892 1/- dull green overprinted ‘ZULULAND’ (SG 10), tied by ESHOWE / ZULULAND (17 Oct) double circle datestamps. Durban (19 Oct) transit on the reverse with London and Paris (12 Nov) transit / arrival datestamps struck on the front. An exceptionally rare commercial franking. £2,200
