Block of six (2x3) apparently from the third setting though unusually showing various types se-tenent: the lower block all type ‘f’ (the centre right stamp with raised stop, and the SE stamp with break in bar), the upper pair appear to be types ‘b’ and ‘c’. The spacing is 11mm on the lower pair and 9.5mm on the others. Very fine to superb fresh mint. A very scarce multiple. SG 22, 23, 26

1888 (August), Official mourning envelope (220x103mm) to Holland with ‘Gouvernementskantoor, O.V.S., / Bloemfontein’ printed in a box at lower left and with an authorising signature. As the envelope was addressed outside the OFS, postage was required and a strip of three 1d red-brown and a single 1/- orange-yellow (SG 2, 9) were applied over the printed ‘In Dienst, O.V.S.’ and tied by Bloemfontein (18 Aug) double circle datestamps struck in red with additional strikes on the reverse. Cape Town (22 Aug), London (12 Sep) and ’sGravenhage (12 Sep) transit / arrival backstamps. Vertical fold resulting in a split (clear of adhesives). Most unusual usage and the 1/- is very scarce on cover.

Bloemfontein (4 Apr) squared octagon datestamp at left. Backstamped with Winburg (5 Apr) unframed circular datestamp. This Artillery Regiment comprised 30-40 soldiers and was the only permanent force in the OFS to have free mailing privileges. A good strike of this very scarce cachet, usually poorly impressed.

1900 (January), sheet of paper bearing 80 OFS 1/- brown ‘TF’ overprint stamps on one side and a further 90 on the reverse making a total of 170 stamps with a face value of £8.10s. Apparently comprising two panes with additional strips from a third. All are cancelled with large circular cachets struck in violet reading ‘TELEGRAAF BOODSCHAP TAK, BLOEMFONTEIN’ with ‘G.P.K. / O.V.S. / Nr…..’ in a central box. Endorsed on the lower gutter margin on one side “Hoofdlager Modder Rivier / 22-31 Jan 1900 / £17.3.6” and “Correct / ACH”. These are believed to be the initials of AC Hochapfel, who had been appointed postmaster for the Boer Forces under General de la Rey and was stationed at Modder River in January 1900. A split runs along a vertical fold from the top through seven rows and some other edge faults. A spectacular item.
