MC646 VRYBURG (British re-occupation) (1900) envelope bearing 1d Hope Standing, initialled "C.St.Q" and cancelled by Vryburg handstamp without date. Un-addressed as are most. Some creasing at lower left. Very scarce.
 
Note: after the British re-occupation of Vryburg on 8 May 1900 Cape stamps were initialled "C.St.Q" by the Intelligence Officer Clifford St. Quintin and were used in the town. These were applied by the Post Office and cancelled with the circular Vryburg handstamp without date. Subsequently Transvaal stamp were overprinted "V.R./SPECIAL/POST".

Note: The writer, General Lord Methuen was ordered to capture the Free State General Christiaan De Wet and his Commando and thereby shorten the war. However, De Wet escaped and evaded capture for the duration of the war. Field Post Office 4 was then located in the Mafeking district.

MBSA1669 RHODESIA 1902, cover, the reverse flap with vermilion imprint for the Town Clerk's Office, Bulawayo (reminiscent of the Tati Concessions revenue stamp design), bearing 1d Arms (SG 77), tied by somewhat indistinct cancel. Addressed to one James Gibson, Prisoner of War, Hut 28, Diyatalawa Camp, Ceylon. Upon arrival struck with violet oval 'PASSED CENSOR P. O. W / E. J. B. / DIYATALAWA' cachet, this used by E J Baumann between 17 Jan 01 to 21 June 02. Re-addressed to Urugasmanhandiya and then further forwarded back again but this time to Hut 41. Reverse bears light 'BURGHERSDORP' sc datestamp. An extraordinary item, mail from Rhodesia to a Boer War POW is virtually unknown. No doubt an intriguing story to uncover. £550

Odd fault including the 8d with a few short perforations, the 5/- with an unobtrusive horizontal crease and the £5 with a few light gum wrinkles, otherwise very fine and fresh mint.
