AC313 CAPE OF GOOD HOPE 1900 (February), censored cover to Natal bearing a single 1d (SG 59a) tied by a superb strike of ONGELUKS NEK (FE 6) single circle datestamp. The reverse with Pietermaritzburg (14 FE), superb IXOPO (FE 15) and very fine DRONK VLEI (FE 17) backstamps. A large pink V.R. / OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW censor label was applied in Pietermaritzburg. A clean and attractive cover with a superb array of scarce postmarks. £85
T1153 TRANSVAAL / Wolmaransstad 1900 (June), unaddressed envelope with ‘THOMAS LEASK & CO., / WOLMARANSSTAD, Z.A.R.’ printed on the flap. Bearing an uncancelled ZAR 1d rose-red and green definitive handstamped ‘Cancelled / V-R-I.’ in blue (SG 2). Thomas Leask was a pre-eminent citizen of Wolmaransstad and was resident during the British occupation of the town (15th June to 27th July 1900). It was Leask’s stock of stamps and stationery that was acquired and overprinted. Leask had previously sold customers envelopes with ZAR stamps already affixed. In order to ‘legalise’ this now unsaleable stock of stamped stationery, it was handstamped in the same manner as the mint stamps. Very scarce. £275
T831 TRANSVAAL 1900 (August), Boer retreat to Eastern Transvaal. ‘Machadodorp’ 1d red postal stationery card addressed to Holland, cancelled MACHADODORP (21 Aug) double circle datestamp. The interesting message (in Dutch) on the reverse includes references to the war ‘…last week we expected to be attacked but the enemy withdrew to Middelburg, it will now be quiet for some time, as they need a few days before they can regroup at Dalmanutha and be ready for battle. The retreat is due to General C. De Wet having crossed the Vaal river…’ [signed] L. van Wijk. 5000 of these cards were printed at Machadodorp in early June 1900 following the British capture of Pretoria and the retreat of the Boer Government to Machadodorp. They were used by various Boer controlled Post offices in the eastern Transvaal between June and September 1900. Utrecht (12 Nov) arrival datestamp. In remarkably fine condition. Very rare commercial use of this card. £325

Bearing a BESTER’S NATAL (24 Aug) temporary rubber single circle datestamp struck in violet, partially overstruck by an Abingdon (16 Sep) duplex canceller, where the cover was re-addressed. Ladysmith (24 Aug) and Abingdon (16 Sep) transits and Worthing (17 Sep) arrival backstamps. Some crumpling at right, though a very scarce cancellation. £125

T598 TRANSVAAL 1901 (January), cover addressed to Vryheid bearing a single ZAR 1d pale blue overprinted ‘V.R.I.’ (postal fiscal, SG F1) and tied by a slightly unclear but readable NGOMO (5 Jan) double circle datestamp. Ngomo was situated near Vryheid in the Nieuwe Republiek, which was incorporated into the ZAR in 1888 and later transferred to Natal in 1903. Very scarce usage and postmark. £175
