Addressed to Germany and uprated with additional ½d and 1d adhesives (SG 61, 59a) all tied by neat strikes of the BONC '1032' with a very fine proving strike of GOSHEN (29 May) below. Cathcart (29 May) and Gnadenfrei (19 June) transit / arrival backstamps. A very clean and attractive proving cover.

1898 / 1910. QV 1d illustrated postal stationery card (General Post Office, Cape Town), the imprinted stamp handstamped ‘Specimen’ (Samuel type SA1) in black. This was a special handstamp believed to have been applied at the time of formation of Union and presented to the Royal Empire Society. It is recorded on Cape postage and revenue stamps though seldom seen on stationery. Few small stains at left. Rare. Q&J P16B Spec

Serowe would have been the last postal agency from where the cover would have been transported (probably by runner) westward towards Lake Ngami. Envelope with a few edge faults though a scarce item of mail apparently between black Africans, from the Crown Colony of Basutoland to a remote part of Bechuanaland Protectorate. £125
