BECHUANALAND / Transvaal 1879 incoming cover from England bearing QV 6d (SG 147, plate 16) tied by Huddersfield / 387 (1 May) duplex cancellation. Addressed to “Revd John Smith Moffat / Molepolole / Via Zeerust  / Transvaal / Cape of Good Hope”. Cape Town (26 May) transit on the front and Potchefstroom / Zuid Afrika (4 June) transit backstamp. The Rev John Smith Moffat was the fourth son of the Rev. Robert Moffat (founder of Kuruman) and brother-in-law of David Livingstone. Flap with tear, otherwise a very rare item of early incoming mail which would have travelled into Bechuanaland from Zeerust via Linokana (ZAR) and Kanye utilising a service operated by missionaries based at Linokana.

£ 650

BECHUANALAND 1915 large part Gold Bullion Parcel Label (Union of South Africa) bearing QV Unappropriated Dies 1/- & 10/- used together with three KGV 1/- (SG 15, 19, 82). BECHUANALAND / Transvaal 1879 (24th April), incoming cover from England bearing QV 6d grey (SG 147, plate 16) tied by Stockwell (24 April) duplex cancellation. Addressed to “Revd J. S. Moffat / Molepolole / Via Zeerust  / Transvaal / Cape of Good Hope”. Cape Town transit on the front and light Pretoria / Zuid Afrika (May? 30) transit backstamp. The Rev. John Smith Moffat was the fourth son of the Rev. Robert Moffat (founder of Kuruman) and brother-in-law of David Livingstone. A very rare item of early incoming mail which would have travelled into Bechuanaland from Zeerust via Linokana (ZAR) and Kanye utilising a service operated by missionaries based at Linokana and in Bechuanaland. Interestingly, of seven letters recorded sent by runner via Zeerust, this is the only one sent by the longer route via Pretoria instead of Potchefstroom.

1934 (February) incoming Airmail cover from the UK, addressed to Francistown and bearing a single KGV 10d (SG 428) tied by London (27 Feb) datestamp. An Air Mail label is affixed at upper left and a pencil notation “AS157” at lower right refers to the Imperial Airways flight number for their ‘southern’ flights on the ‘Africa’ service which was extended from Kisumu in 1931/32.  The cover departed the U.K. on Wednesday the 28th February aboard the HP 42W Heracles ‘Horatius’ G-AAXC and arrived in Johannesburg on Friday 9th March 1934 in the Armstrong Whitworth machine ’Andromeda’ (used from Nairobi). It is unclear if mail for Bechuanaland connected with the SWA feeder service at Kimberley (where the flight would have arrived on the 10th) and then travelled by surface mail via Mafeking and Gaberones to Francistown or if it was offloaded at Johannesburg and then by road to Mafeking.

SHOSHONG BECHUANALAND (AU 21 / 88) several single circle datestamps struck on left marginal block of four of the ½d vermilion overprinted 'Protectorate'.  The datestamps for Kanye, Molepolole, Shoshong, Tati and Gubulawayo with 'Bechuanaland' at base are recorded used together on one piece proving the datestamps had not been allocated to their respective agencies at this date. This item was therefore not cancelled at Shoshong but more likely Vryburg. The stamps have full gum and are u/m proving the datestamps 'by favour' status. Stamps bearing Kanye, Molepolole and Shoshong datestamps for 21 August appear to be as rare as the Tati / Bechuanaland and Gubulawayo / Bechuanaland cancellations. A very rare block. SG 40 £700
