1895 (May), cover addressed Johannesburg, bearing two vertical pairs of the 1895 1d rose surcharged ‘HALF’ (SG 125) tied by Durban (7 May) double circle datestamps. Johannesburg (9 May) arrival backstamp. Nice usage of this provisional on cover paying the 2d rate to neighbouring territories.

1909 (April), cover to England bearing vertical pair of KEVII 1d (SG 128) tied by Durban (25 Apr) double circle datestamps. Endorsed at lower left 'Late Fee / p___' and bearing an unframed 'PAID' cachet struck in black strike above. With Sunderland (13 May) arrival backstamp. An attractive example of the Late Fee service.

1858 (December), cover to Cape Town bearing embossed 3d rose tied by NATAL (10 Dec) single circle datestamp struck in blue. Endorsed 'Per Waldensian' and 'Prepaid'. Cape Town (18 Dec) arrival backstamp in red. The Waldensian was a 300 ton barque-rigged steamer owned by John T. Rennie of Aberdeen who placed the ship in service between Durban and Cape Town in 1857. The Waldensian and its sister ship, the Madagascar, were licensed by the Natal Government to carry mails between the two colonies. The Madagascar was wrecked in 1858 and the Waldensian in 1862 when the service was abandoned (SESA Vol 10, p579 & 583). The flap with tear. A scarce cover from this short-lived service.

1878 (January), cover to England bearing 6d violet overprinted 'POSTAGE' (SG 83) tied by '15' in barred oval numeral canceller and shield type datestamp (Hart type L.1) with number '15' dated 16 January, struck at top right. Both these cancels were allocated to Bushman's River. With G.P.O. NATAL (17 Jan) backstamp and London 'PAID' (21 Feb) arrival datestamp struck in red on front.

NATAL / TRANSVAAL ZAR 1884 (October), incoming mourning cover from England bearing QV 6d dull green (SG 194) tied by Sidmouth (2 Oct) squared circle datestamp. Addressed to “Alan E. Ede Esqre” / Post Office / Newcastle / Natal / South Africa” and endorsed “viâ Dartmouth / Pr ‘Roslin Castle’ / Oct 3, 1884”. Upon arrival in Natal, the cover was readdressed to “Moodies Reef” (ZAR) and endorsed “Moodies Reef / via Kantoor’ in red The postage to the ZAR was receipted by the affixing of a single Natal QV 4d brown (SG 102) tied by a Newcastle (3 Nov) datestamp. Dartmouth (3 Oct), G.P.O. Natal (28 Oct), Newcastle (3 Nov), M.W. Stroom / Transvaal (6 Nov) transit / arrival backstamps. Closed flap tear, otherwise very fine and a very scarce example of redirected mail, especially to the ZAR goldfields. Alan Ede along with Sam Newmarsh, J T Rimer and R Otto discovered the Umvoti Reef early in 1884.

Ede Esqre” / Post Office / Newcastle / Natal / South Africa” and endorsed “viâ Plymouth / Pr Spartan / Feb 27, 1885”. Upon arrival in Natal, the cover was readdressed to “Barberton / Moodies Reef” (ZAR), the postage to the ZAR being receipted with the addition of a single Natal QV 4d brown (SG 102) tied by a Newcastle (30 Mar) datestamp with an additional stike on the reverse. Backstamped Plymouth (27 Feb), GPO Natal (25 Mar). A very scarce example of redirected mail, especially to the ZAR goldfields. Alan Ede along with Sam Newmarsh, J T Rimer and R Otto discovered the Umvoti Reef early in 1884.

1885 (October), cover addressed to the USA, bearing QV 4d brown pair (SG 102) cancelled with Newcastle (22 Oct with month shown as ‘10’). The cover was re-addressed within the USA and received an unframed ‘FORWARDED’ cachet. Durban, New York, Louisville KY and St Louis MO backstamps. A rather grubby cover with staining and edge faults, though not without character.

1902 (October), cover used within Natal bearing pair of ½d dull green (SG 97a) each tied by very fine strikes of UTRECHT / NATAL (23 OCT) single circle datestamps struck in purple. Following the end of the Boer War, a portion of land including Utrecht, was ceded from the ZAR to Natal. This datestamp served as a temporary measure until permanent datestamps had been prepared and issued. Newcastle (OC 23) arrival backstamp.

1902 (27th November), blue printed ‘On His Majesty’s Service’ stampless cover addressed to Utrecht, bearing Newcastle (27 Nov) double circle datestamp. Backstamped with a superb strike of the UTRECHT / NATAL (28 Nov) temporary rubber single circle datestamp struck in violet on the reverse. The cover was undelivered and received a very fine UNCLAIMED straight-line cachet struck in black and a second UTRECHT / NATAL (2 Jan 1903) temporary datestamp on the front, again struck in violet. Utrecht was formerly in the ZAR and was part of territory ceded to Natal following the end of the Boer War in 1902. A scarce cancellation.

1907 (January) printed ‘NATAL GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS. / O.H.M.S.’ cover (230x103mm) bearing single KEVII ½d overprinted 'OFFICIAL' (SG O1) tied by Durban (21 Jan) double circle datestamp. The cover is addressed locally and is unsealed, confirming the ½d  reduced / open letter rate. The envelope folded vertically and horizontally, well clear of the adhesive. Very scarce usage. £275

1900, De La Rue proposal / proof for the 1901 QV Letter Card. Bearing Coat-of-Arms and text printed in carmine on pale blue with manuscript endorsements by the Agent General, dated 29th June 1900, approving the proposal. Although the cards were originally requested to be light green, the Agent General agreed to use the same pale blue colour as used for the British letter cards. Adherence on reverse of left tear-off section where originally affixed to reference sheet. Scarce.

Bearing manuscript endorsements “for the (A)gent (G)eneral”, dated 29th June 1900, approving the proposal. The flap with embossed oval in pale orange with ‘Natal Government Railways’ around coat-of-arms. Some (selloptape?) stains, mainly confined to reverse. Unusual.
