EMBOSSED REVENUES

Note: Law No.18 of 1868, which suspended Ordinance No.3 of 1850, required changes in certain Stamp Duties and Fees, obliging the treasury to obtain additional dies for these new rates. A total of 13 new duties were ordered and were engraved by Mr. B. Wyon as were the earlier embossed issues. It is understood the original dies, now defaced, are held by the Museum Services Department (or its successor) in Pietermaritzburg.

CHEQUE STAMPS

Note: On 9th January 1886 the Colonial Secretary wrote to the Crown Agents requisitioning “A strong lever press with Die and metal counterpart”. The die to be circular or oval with a Queen’s Head or Crown in the centre and the words ‘Natal One Penny’ around it. The requisition was forwarded to De La Rue on the 13th February 1886 with the reference ‘Natal req. 14/1886 Stamps’. On the 16th February, De La Rue submitted a quote and an essay. The Crown Agents requested a further sketch with only a Crown in the centre. This was submitted on the 19th February. This was also found unsatisfactory and De La Rue submitted a further oval sketch on 25th February. As none of these were acceptable the Crown Agents returned the Essays to De La Rue who sent a further sketch on the 7th April, and from this the necessary metal Dies were then made.
