1922 (November), two-page printed advertisement advising that the ‘Quarterly Review of Philately’ had ceased publication to be succeeded by the ‘South African Philatelist’ on the 1st February 1923. Addressed to the USA and sent at the open letter rate, bearing a single King’s Head ½d tied by Johannesburg (29 Nov) roller cancellation. Exceptionally clean and attractive and an important part of South Africa’s philatelic history.

STAMP EXHIBITION / DURBAN (5 Jul) double circle commemorative datestamp. This was the first International Philatelic Exhibition staged in South Africa. The addressee was one of the founder members of the P.S. of Natal and served on the exhibition committee. Vertical fold at right, clear of adhesive. Scarce.

Scarce example of this supplementary fee.

With boxed ‘COMMUNICATION OF THE / NATURE OF A LETTER / --- TO PAY’ cachet in black and 'UNCLAIMED / AT PRIVATE BOXES' unframed cachet struck in red. The tax due was indicated by a large ‘1D’ in black and receipted with a Transvaal 1d postage due (SG D1) tied by small triangular inspection datestamp. The reverse with Cape Town P.B.S. and Cape Town / T datestamps (8 and 11 Nov). Scarce combination of markings.

Bearing BORDON / HANTS (17 DE) double circle datestamp. Apparently Bordon Camp in Hampshire was a base or staging post. Roughly opened at side, only affecting the reverse. Unusual.

Endorsed “Posted out / of course / (initials)” in red ink and with Kimberley (23 Feb) datestamp and registration cachet struck in blue. The postage and presumably fine were receipted with a pair of King’s Heads 6d (SG 11a) affixed at lower left and tied by Kimberley registration datestamps (23 Feb) with further strikes on the reverse. Scarce example of ‘posted out of course’ to an unusual destination.

Addressed to the USA and bearing three examples of the Roto 1d ‘ship’ (SG 43), one of which shows almost half the stamp without printing. Presumably this was once part of a paper join pair, separated before affixing. All tied by ‘Use C.O.D Parcel Post’ slogan cancellation (13 Jan). Most unusual.

The cover was underpaid and endorsed ‘1s/- to pay’ in manuscript and received a ‘1s/’ handstamp. This was receipted with two pairs of 3d postage dues (SG D28) applied to the reverse and tied by Cape Town (7 Mar) datestamps. As the addressee could not be located, the cover received a bilingual ‘GONE NO ADDRESS’ and ‘POSTAGE NOT / COLLECTED’ boxed cachets (with a further two of the latter on the reverse). A scarce example of a postage due charge being raised, but not collected.
