1866
(May),
blue pre-stamp entire being an official post office communication
endorsed ‘In dienst’ (On service) and addressed to the post office at

confirms receipt on the 11th May and is signed by the postmaster at
“Marthinus Wessel Stroom” which was the name of the town before being
renamed ‘Wakkerstroom’. Very scarce, early and most unusual. |

when folded. Very scarce and unusual early Masonic item from South
Africa. |

1886
(December), cover from Pretoria to the fledgling Johannesburg. Bearing
a single Vurtheim 2d brown-purple (SG 177) tied by ‘1’ target-type
cancellers with ‘proving’ G.P.O. TRANSVAAL (Dec 17) datestamp (with
year error ‘98’ for ‘86’) struck at upper left. Addressed to Dr A
Schenck / Johannesbirg / Witwaters Rand / Post restant’ with large part
of WITWATERSRAND (DE 18 / 86)
single circle arrival datestamp on the reverse (part of flap missing).
In a 1998 article (Ilsapex brochure), George van den Hurk stated the
Witwatersrand Post Office opened on 1st October 1886 and that the
earliest recorded date of the Witwatersrand datestamp (first
Johannesburg postmark) was 23 March 1887. Dr Schenck was a German
geographer, mineralogist and botanist while the writer appears to be a
Dr (H) Haevernick who published “Die Goldfelder von Transvaal” in 1885.
This may well be the earliest recorded cover into the newly discovered
(March 1886) Witwatersrand goldfields. Very
rare. |
