FEATURED ITEM

RU372
RU 372

1/3 major variety, OCHRE OMITTED. The unique sheet number '091' with a total of 12 stamps showing this variety. The ochre printing stops at the right edge of column three, is completely omitted on columns four and five and starts again about 75% of the way through column six. Endorsed on top margin '7.10.0' believed to be an accounting mark. Very minor toning top right corner well away from the varieties. A stunning item and without doubt the most important of the era. SG 381a

Note: This sheet was apparently discovered soon after being issued. It is not known from which Post Office it emanated, and the pen endorsement in the top margin confirms it being released thus. It was sold intact soon afterwards and has remained in a private collection ever since.

SOLD
The list of Rhodesia UDI period below was originally published by ourselves in a printed and illustrated version. This work is still available at a cost of £20 (plus postage), and is a valuable record of what does exist from this era. We list it here in its entirety, even although a good number of items have since been sold, as a record of what this remarkable assembly did originally contain:

RU100
½d major variety, PAIR, ONE STAMP WITH OVERPRINT OMITTED. Lower left corner strip of four, both left stamps without overprint. VERY RARE, only two others of this variety exist. SG 359a

Note: This variety emanates from a single corner block where the corner of the sheet was folded over during the overprint run, with part of the overprint visible on the reverse. The fold covered the lower three rows, giving a total of three such strips that were affected. This is the only strip that has two left stamps without overprint and the only strip that shows completely missing and normal stamps together, as the two above show partial impressions of the overprint adjacent to the omitted stamp. A great rarity from the UDI period.

3d major variety, PAIR, ONE STAMP WITHOUT OVERPRINT. Left stamp without overprint, right stamp lettering of overprint malformed. Left stamp with rounded corner. Extremely rare

Note: This item is the result of a paper fold during the overprint run, in a very similar way and position to the ½d variety. Part of the missing overprint is visible on the reverse of the left stamp. No information is known as to further examples of this variety. The left stamp has the 'mark by Kudu's ear' flaw, proving position 19/1, so in theory position 20/1 could exist as a similar pair. The left stamp with faults, including rounded corner, as to be expected with the nature of this variety.

RU254
1d as above, but a strip of 20 with one normal join, then repaired join 12 stamps from that and in addition the stamps from that join incorrectly stuck INVERTED to the others. Most unusual

Note: A small number of these repaired coil joins have been seen. Evidently the margins as usually used proved inadequate and at times the strips would break, hence the need to use tape.

RU266
2d similar to above, but the top three rows of the sheet, the fold far more dramatic with the top right corner stamp virtually imperforate around its design. Spectacular and very rare

2d major variety, YELLOW-ORANGE OMITTED. Left marginal vertical strip of three, top stamp normal, stamp below with a trace of orange and the lower stamp completely omitted. Striking and scarce. SG 375a. Brandon certificate

PHOTO
RU268
2d major variety, YELLOW-ORANGE OMITTED. Vertical block of six, ALL four top stamps with yellow-orange omitted. Stunning and very rare. SG 375a

Note: It is possible that this is the largest surviving multiple of the variety. Another multiple containing four of these off the lower margin with imprint was offered on the Lamont Smith sale of Stephan Welz 14th June, 1989 as lot 310, which was subsequently re-offered at Harmers of London on 22nd January 1991, as lot 753. During its delivery to the successful purchaser the item went astray in the post and was never recovered. Further to this saga, one half from this same block was offered for auction by International Philatelic Services of Johannesburg, on public auction. Despite the fact it was brought to the attention of both auctioneers that this item was previously stolen in the post, no further action was taken.

3d partial PALE BLUE OMITTED. Vertical strip of 11 with part imprint in lower margin (RRISON AND S), stamp four with pale blue about 70% omitted, stamp five with only a faint trace of pale blue and stamp six with about 80% of pale blue omitted. Striking. SG (large part) 376b

Note: Examples of this variety with pale blue entirely missing are in our opinion very rare. The majority have at least some trace of the blue visible. Items 308 and 309 (top stamp) fall into the category of entirely omitted.

Essays for the original three values:

Essays for the black wording only, pasted on transparent overlay, each with the proposed portrait of the Queen removed, presumably an alternative design was decided upon. Comprising:
1.) The original 2d value with 'SIR ROWLAND HILL' pasted in at left and the balance of the wording for the design, endorsed at lower right 'White centre / BLUE case' and '9d' circled and at base 'ALL BLUE ON THIS OVERLAY'. (The '9d' signifies a change of intended value for this design. No 2d value was issued).
2.) The original 3d value of the 'ZEEDERBERG COACH' endorsed 'ORANGE' at top, 'BLUE' at base and 'FACE FOR POSITION ONLY' at right, with the balance of the black lettering pasted on.
3.) The original 1/6 value of the 'PENNY BLACK' endorsed 'White centres' by '1/6', 'ALL BLACK ON THIS OVERLAY' and 'NOT THIS PORTRAIT / FOR POSITION ONLY' upper right, with the balance of the black lettering pasted on.

The above three items

Note: The original concept for this issue was for a set of three stamps. Harrison & Sons had their artist Mr. V. Whiteley prepare the designs but due to political consideration their production by Harrisons was not possible. The above three essays are presumably this original work which was then handed over to Mardon Printers.

RU451
Essays for the additional 2/6 value:

1.) Rough sketch close to the issued stamp on lined paper in pencil and coloured by red and green crayon. Endorsed at top 'Red ground - ½ tone base to our other stamp', at right 'Queens head as other stamps' and lower right 'change denomination to 2/6', all in red ink.
2.) Large black and white reproduction of the 1892 £5 Arms stamp, considerably touched up with both white and black ink. On thin card then pasted onto thick cream card.

The above two items

Note: In 'RHODESIA A Postal History' by R. C. Smith, he records the large reproduction of the £5 stamp commenting 'The photograph was considerably enlarged and then retouched. The result was re-photographed and consequently the reproduction of this stamp has the appearance of almost being superior in quality to the original' (see p431). Presumably he was referring to this exact item. The inclusion of this fourth 2/6 value was intended to round up the set face value to 5/-, apparently to ease remittance by overseas buyers. This set is the first attempt by local printers at serious stamp production bar the hastily produced 2/6 Independence stamp. Essay for the Miniature sheet:
£550

RU452
The black lettering for the marginal wording of the miniature, pasted on thick card with printers guide lines around, to the exact size of the issued sheet

Note: Essays for any stamps of the UDI period are virtually unknown in private hands. It was policy for all material of this nature to become the property of the PTC. It is possible that as this was the first seriously produced set of stamps in the country, policy was not in place for these items to be handed over to the PTC. The above items are not only unique in themselves, but are exceedingly rare as essays from the era.

5/- as above, but a lower left corner vertical strip of three with cylinder 1A inscriptions in margin

Note: When these sheets were split up it was decided to cut them along a lower edge leaving an intact row of perforations on the lower stamp, the stamp adjoining it below appearing to be imperforate at top. Of the above selection offered with this variety, only the single stamp has NOT been treated in this way, having normal perforations all round. With the inclusion of the two examples above with cylinder inscriptions, at least two sheets must have been affected. It is not possible to accurately establish if the single copy came from a third sheet or simply was not treated in the same manner as the others.

Note: This variety has only recently come to light, this block and a further two examples which once adjoined this block have been recorded. Considering the sheet format, a possible 12 such examples could exist if only one sheet was so affected. The whereabouts of the other eight examples are unknown.

RU513
2d first printing, vertical strip of three off left margin, all three affected by a 'dry' print area on the left side of each stamp. Striking and most unusual on these issues

Note: This variety may have been caused by water on the plate. They are very unusual to have been issued as Mardons were particularly careful in examining all their sheets for any such varieties.

RU532
10/- first printing, as above, but in a vertical top marginal strip of four

Note: Although traditionally termed the 'first printing', these stamps were in fact printed after the 10/- 'trial' printings. The 'retouch' flaw originally occurred in the trial cylinder 1A sheets and because it was so obvious Mardons decided to remove it from the plate. The result in the 'first' printings is a large pale area to the left of the small Guineafowl in the top left corner. It is the most prominent of all the UDI constant flaws and is more prominent than the non-retouched 'trial' flaw.

10/- JH3 paper printing, top left corner 'traffic light' pair

Note: It is an interesting observation that according to 'The Mashonaland Guide', they were unable to list the flaws on the 1A sheets of the 10/- and £1 JH3 papers as they had not been seen by them. It was customary for members of The Mashonaland Philatelic Society to convene soon after every issue since Federation days with the purpose of recording all relevant information, and to examine complete sheets of the stamps to list every minor or more prominent printing flaw. Anyone who has worked with 'The Guide' will appreciate the author's great diligence. It must be a reflection of the scarcity of the 10/- and £1 values that they were unable to locate intact sheets from cylinder 1A.

Note: These curious items came to light about seven years ago in Harare within a miscellaneous lot of modern Rhodesias. In addition were a number of top half strips without the corresponding lower half. The entire group had been 'shredded' horizontally along the margins and half way through the design. All are ungummed. The above three items have all been rejoined with hinges and comprise the only known complete units. By their condition and nature, we assume they are printers waste and somehow passed into private hands.

Presentation Cards, each value in issued format applied to separate white card, printed at top in gilt 'MARDON PRINTERS (PVT.) LTD.' and with their logo at left, each signed (by ?) at lower right and each struck with 'SALISBURY STATION / RHODESIA' cds lower left dated 22nd May, the first day of issue. Rare

Note: These cards follow the tradition of earlier types but by now normal issued stamps were applied and not the imperforate types as before. Possibly it had been realised by this stage that the previous imperforates had been somewhat abused.

ESSAY:  Proposed original design for the $1 value watercolour (114x105mm) on thick card (178x178mm), depicting a helicopter on the ground and medical staff attending to a patient, in the theme of the Air Medical Rescue but this altered in the issued stamp to a helicopter in the Air. Signed at lower right by Rose Martin, who designed most of the set. Highly attractive

Note: This is one of very few hand-painted essays for modern Rhodesia in private hands. Perhaps because it bears the theme for the value and not the final design it was allowed to be kept by the artist. This item, the Rhopex items earlier in this list and essays for the 1966 CAA and 1978 Powered Flight issue are ALL that are known in private hands for the period.

Collection on album pages being the COMPLETE range of printings of the 1970 and 1973 new values, all in double bottom rows both cylinders 1A and 1B, odd values lacking right corners (as noted) and each with date and any difference recorded. Comprising:

1c: Three printings (original lacking the right corner block of six)
2c: Five printings (original lacking the right corner block of six)
2½c: Five printings (original lacking the right corner block of six)
3½c: Four printings (original lacking the right corner block of six)
5c: Three printings (original and first reprint lacking the right corner block of six)
8c: One printing
10c: Four printings
12½c: Three printings
15c: Two printings
20c: Four printings
25c: Three printings
50c: Three printings
$1: Two printings
$2: One printing
3c: Three printings
4c: One printing
6c: One printing
7½c: Two printings
14c: Two printings

Each block mounted with hinges, usually on two stamps. A rare assembly

Note: This is a highly unusual group. A number of the last printing(s) are not recorded in 'The Guide' and this is one of the few complete records for this issue. The group illustrates a number of the shade variations encountered, particularly the 1c and 50c which are quite distinct as the third printings on each.

RU801
2½c imprint block of 12 (4x3) with strong pre-printing paper crease running diagonally through five stamps at top. As a result, all stamps appear with blue printing doubled, including imprint in margin. Very striking

Note: This variety is not to be confused with the 'double black' printings encountered on various issues of modern Rhodesia. The doubling would have been caused by the paper crease disturbing the normal run of the dark blue printing. Paper creases are notably rare from Mardons, this block and the 'doubling' effect no doubt being unique.

8c SURCHARGE DOUBLE, ONCE ALBINO. Complete strip of ten horizontally across the sheet, stamp at right with albino impression shifted slightly to the left and then progressively shifting downward towards the left with the left three stamps all having '8c' now at the top. Rare in this format. SG 526a

Note: Three sheets with this variety were discovered in the stock of the Zimbabwe Stamp Company in 1986. One sheet had the albino impression slightly shifted left in a uniform way. Items 985-987 come from this sheet. The other two sheets had the impression more or less correctly aligned at the right and then progressively shifting down and slightly left across to the left of the sheets where the '8c' appears in the stamp below. Examples from the left of these two sheets are therefore the most desirable examples of this variety, items 988-991 come from these sheets.

Set on official First Day Cover, the 6c, 16c and 24c ALL with DOUBLE BLACK PRINTING, the 24c particularly strong. An extraordinary combination and no doubt unique

Note: How this cover arose is either the most extraordinary coincidence or was the result of some prior knowledge of the existence of these double blacks. The cover is cancelled with the official 'FIRST DAY OF ISSUE' strikes and in all ways would appear to be as issued by the Post Office.

Note: This type of variety has not been seen on any other stamps of the era. Under close examination with a high powered glass, a considerable disturbance of the screening dots can be seen. This may be the result of water affecting the plate. The three stamps above are all that are recorded.

1976 10th November, 4c on underpaid Airmail cover South Africa to Salisbury, endorsed 'TAX' then applied with 2 x 2c PRINTED ON GUMMED SIDE decimal dues (SG D19a) indistinctly cancelled but with violet boxed P. T. C. CAUSEWAY cachet on reverse dated 15 NOV 1976. RARE

Note: During November 1976 a batch of the 2c postage dues printed on gummed side was released at Causeway Post Office. It is recorded that when the Philatelic community became aware of these, it was remembered that the floor around the tax counter was littered with 2c dues that would not adhere to the envelopes. It was soon established what had occurred and the faulty sheets were withdrawn. The above two covers have the dues stuck on with some type of adhesive, and because of them being gummed on the front, the canceller would not take clearly. Genuine covers are rare, later dated covers are philatelically contrived.

POSTAL HISTORY AND POLITICALLY RELATED

Mail and Surcharged Mail to the United Kingdom
RU1323
A delightful series of correspondence between R. Mayo and Harold Wilson, comprising:1.) Two 2/6 Independence First Day Covers, each different registered and applied with additional 2/6 definitives and both addressed to 'The Right Honourable Harold Wilson'. One with 'STAMPS NOT VALID' cachets then deleted and both with green boxed 'POSTAGE PAID / F. S. 'cachets, i.e. the so called 'not valid' taxed element ignored. Both with original registered slips.2.) The envelope in which these two covers were returned, bearing the '10 Downing Street / Whitehall' imprint on reverse and with small printed 'With the Private Secretary's Compliments' slip. The envelope was presumably sent in the Diplomatic Bag as it bears a 'SALISBURY 28 XII 65' machine cancel.3.) Copy of a letter acknowledging receipt and thanking the Prime Minister for returning so promptly the above two covers. Further requesting him to do the same again but this time with an 'Independence Overprint' First Day Cover, and that he includes 2/3d to cover the cost should it be taxed. Registered slip together.4.) A copy of a letter sent to Mr. Bottomley requesting he do the same with a further two covers, the registered slips enclosed.5.) Reply from the request to Harold Wilson as number 3, that 'it is not the Prime Minister's practice to return the envelopes he receives (etc.) and I return to you 2s 3d which you forwarded'. The enclosing envelope stampless with 'On Her Britannic Majesty's Service' cachet in green and violet oval 'DIPLOMATIC SERVICE' strike below.6.) Copy of a letter from R. Mayo which in essence comments that having been delighted in receiving the two earlier covers returned, he now was surprised that the later two were held back. Further 'that an official enquiry is to be held regarding the sale of envelopes addressed to yourself' and to request information as to their fate.7.) In finality to the above, a letter from one A. H. Reid on official '10 Downing Street' printed letterhead stating 'I write on behalf of the Prime Minister to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of March 14. (etc.) (The envelope) 'It is retained in this office. I am not prepared to return it.' Together with envelope addressed to R. Mayo with no inscription that it was sent through the post, one would presume it was hand delivered ?* An extraordinary group, summarising the rapidly deteriorating relations between the two nations and the petty nature of the British Government at the time in dealing with the whole Rhodesia UDI situation

Note: In R. C. Smith's book 'Rhodesia - A Postal History', he illustrates on page 320 one of the actual covers as described in point 1. above. He further refers to the enquiry mentioned, and that nothing further was heard of it.

SOLD
RU1461
Republic of Rhodesia banner, design as above, but specially produced very large size (approximately 3m x 7m). 'William Smith & Gurrock' official flagmakers label sewn in. Exceedingly rare and could well be unique

Note: It would appear that this banner has been flown as it is somewhat soiled and the corners are frayed. Recent enquiries made to William Smith and Gurrock as to why this vast flag was produced yielded no further information. Possibly used for ceremonial unveiling of the flag in 1970 when Rhodesia was declared a Republic. Magnificent!
