BECHUANALAND
FEATURED ITEM
TOGETHER AGAIN – AFTER 111 YEARS !

Lot 196 of the Tamsen sale in May 1900 comprised a block of 12 of the Cape 1d carmine-red with overprint reading up (SG 31). The description read: “…an unused block of 12, on two only the surcharge ‘British’ appears, and one is entirely without surcharge, rare”.

Subsequent research by Brian Hurst (Runner Post 76, p1885-6) has shown that the varieties listed in the auction description were caused by the folding under of part of the upper right corner of the sheet along a diagonal crease.

The crease is at a slight angle and only affected a vertical strip of four stamps from the upper right corner of the pane. This gave rise to the varieties listed as SG 31a and SG 31c.

1) Row 1: Upper marginal horizontal pair showing plate number ‘7’. Major variety HORIZONTAL PAIR, ONE WITHOUT OVERPRINT (SG 31a). BPA certificate (2008)

This pair does not appear to have been on the market since the Tamsen sale (we have been unable to trace any appearance on auction). The pair was illustrated in Runner Post 36 (p765) as part of the Rare Stamp Study initiated by David Finlay. The illustration was supplied by H.R. Holmes from his reference material though no details were given as to its history or whereabouts.

2) Row 2: The right stamp of the pair has ‘Bechuanaland’ completely omitted (SG31c, ex Holmes, lot 1104). BPA certificate (2003)

3) Row 3: The right stamp of the pair has almost all of ‘Bechuanaland’ omitted (ex Dale-Lichtenstein, lot 12).

The whereabouts of the pair from row four is unknown and it may not have survived. Assuming the crease continued into that row, then the right stamp would have a small part of the base of ‘Bechuanaland’ shaved.

BPA certificates for the upper pair and that from row two both confirm the genuineness of the pairs. Both also mention a ‘vertical gum crease’ or ‘creased’. As it was due to the folding back of the right stamps along the line of this crease which gave rise to the variety (and partial albino impressions of ‘Bechuanaland’), these comments must be considered as positive confirmation rather than faults.

For the first time in 111 years, all three of these major varieties have been reunited and are offered together again as one group. Undoubtedly amongst the rarest items of Bechuanaland philately. Unique and therefore missing from every major collection. SG 31a, 31c
