AR654 Die Proof. King George V and Queen Mary vignette printed in black, before hardening, on wove paper inset on thick card (69x100mm). The portrait is in its full design before the medals were cut down to fit the frame and also show ‘bruise’ flaws below the King’s medals and a diagonal scratch between 4 and 5mm above the King’s Head. Exceptionally rare and beautifully written up on an exhibition page. Believed to be unique in black.

Note: this proof is believed to have originally been in the Arthur V. Jacob collection. Subsequently ex Harry Birkhead (private sale), Henk de Lange (private sale), Alan Uria (Spink 2012) and Dr. Arnold Brickman (Stanley Gibbons 2024). The description in the Alan Uria catalogue incorrectly stated the proof was ex the Robert Gibbs sale in 1987.

1d
Note on colour classification of the 1d value. The 1d remains the last value of the Double Head issue to have published a comprehensive printing / shade classification. As a result there is some confusion as to how to allocate specific examples to the three listed in Gibbons. The following are the parameters used here:
SG 123 bright carmine. This group is characterised firstly by the shade, which although is the most 'pink' and therefore closest to 'rose-red' as per SG 125, is grouped under SG 123. The shade is subtle and suffuse in impression. Secondly it typically has a pink blothchy appearance on the reverse. It is the most common encountered mint perf. 14.
SG 124 carmine-lake. A large variance in shade is grouped under this SG number, from light to very intense. The shade is more of a scarlet nuance, and is often accompanied with a browning of the gum as the shade becomes more intense.
SG 125 rose-red. Although the classification 'rose' implies a more pink shade, the colour is quite bright and also towards scarlet. The impression is quite distinctly different from the bright carmine family, with none of the suffusion and in comparison there is a lot of white or contrast overall. The gum is a clear cream with none of the pink blotchyness as seen in SG 123. It could well be that this is the most difficult of the three SG listed shades, despite the relative SG value indications.
